Sick
by Shel Silverstein
"I cannot go to school today,"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay,
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash, and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox
And there's one more--that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut, my eyes are blue--
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke--
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button's caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb,
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is--what?
What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is---Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play!"
I have never read this poem before, but I enjoyed reading it. It reminded me of the days when I told my mom that I did not feel well and then came up with a bunch of excuses for why I shouldn't go to school. They never seemed to work, but I always tried. When it comes to poetry, I like poems that aren't real lengthy. The one's that are real long and have hidden meanings usually lose my interest, but the one's that are quick and to the point I enjoy. I also like poems that are fun meaning are written in a way where they make a shape or something to that effect.

Yeah, I never missed an opportunity to miss school. The smallest symptoms of a cold and I stayed home. I got really good at lying to my mom and staying home haha. Senior year though I missed 15 days!
ReplyDeleteI can most definitely relate to this poem! I always tried to miss as many days of school as possible. I chose wisely and it is still funny to look back on those days. Good choice of a poem. It brings back some silly memories!
ReplyDeleteThis poem is very true. The only problem is when I would try to skip school my mom would always say "Well if your too sick for school then your too sick to go out" so I would have to stay on on a weekend. So I sucked it up and went.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I really did this when I was little. It was more of a high school thing for me, except my mom knew I skipped for no reason just because I felt like it. Apparently she was ok with it because I slept in quite a bit my senior year in high school.
ReplyDeleteThis poem made me laugh when I read the last few lines. I feel like most kids always tried to pull that on their parents. I had it tougher since my mother was a nurse so I couldn't really fool her. My senior year I missed a total of 4 days of school. One for a college visit, two for swimming meets that started friday morning, and one on senior skip day. That was the most days I ever missed in a year of HS.
ReplyDeleteThis is a throw back to the days of many excuses not to go to school. I have never heard this one before either, but I really like it.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cute poem because almost every kid has tried to make up an excuse for why they cant go to school. The end is cute where the kid finds out it is saturday and he/she is fine to go outside to play, but couldn't go to school
ReplyDeleteI think everyone can relate to this poem. I don't know a single kid who didn't try and play sick to miss class. I know I did.
